In this session, I would like to talk about Information Management. I know most of you conceive that what it is. It is the way of managing information. However, let me share with you, what exactly information management is, and what you are supposed to know in this topic.

  • Information management or IM is to manage any kind of information, or the collection and management of information from one or more sources and distribute to audience.
  • 4 Components of IM are Technology, People or user, content and process.
  • In term of technology, IM encompasses systems such as web content management, document management, record management and so on.
  • Any technology system has its own problem, but every problem can be solved. Absolutely, in information management also has problems, such as large number of disparate IMS, little integration or coordination between information systems, range of legacy systems requiring upgrading or replacement and many more.
In order to know wisely, we should know one more thing. It is about computer. Now let’s talk about computer. Nowadays, computer has been spread to everywhere in the world. So it is useful for us to know what computer is.
  • Computer is a programmable machine or device that carries out what it has been instructed to do.
  • Processing of computer requires a set of instructions, known as programs or software.
  • A computer holds data, instruction, instruction and information in storage for future use.
  • Evolution of computers has five era:
- Pre computer and early computer is Abacus.

- First generation is Vacuum Tube, followed by Universal Automatic Computer.

- Second generation is Transistors.

- Third generation is Integrated Circuits.

- Fourth generation is Very Large Scale Integration and Ultra Large Scale Integration.

- Fifth generation is what is going on in present time.

  • We can rely on computer, because of its speed, versatility, storage and communication.
  • We have got six categories of computer;

  1. Embedded computer (a mini computer embedded into a specific product for a specific function)
  2. Mobile computer (small computer that fits on our hand)
  3. Personal computer (designed for a single user at a time)
  4. Midrange (physically likes small cabinet, hosting data and programs)
  5. Mainframe (computer that can handle thousands of connected users)
  6. Supper computer (it is used for computation and processing)
Finally, I want to share with what I have learned. Actually, this lesson tells us about IM and computer. So things that I got is the way that we manage our information by using a proper computer. In case of our learning, accessing devices, which can support us, is very important. Having computer is more useful for everybody. Everybody should be able to have it one. It can open the door for us to access any information in the world. Last but not least, computer can also destroy us when we do not know how to use smartly.

Bye....Bye......for now
